Jagdish Kumar appointed as chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC)

New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar has been appointed as the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Officials gave this information on Friday. Kumar’s tenure in JNU was full of controversies. He is currently taking over as the acting Vice-Chancellor after his term ended last year.

Confirming this, a senior education ministry official said, “Jagdesh Kumar has been appointed as the new chairman of the UGC.” The post was lying vacant since December 7 after Professor DP Singh resigned from the post of GC President on attaining the age of 65 years. Singh took over as the UGC chairman in 2018. The post of Vice-Chairman of Higher Education Regulatory is also vacant. The ministry is yet to appoint Kumar’s successor in JNU.
