The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday that the ‘Biparjoy’ Saurashtra and Kutch region experienced strong winds and heavy rains as it moved towards the Gujarat coast. IMD said that ‘Biparjoy’ is set to change course on Wednesday and move in the north-east direction towards Kutch and Saurashtra and it will hit near Jakhau port on Thursday evening.
According to a press release issued by the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC), Khambhaliya taluk of Devbhoomi Dwarka district recorded the highest rainfall of 121 mm in the 24-hour period ending Wednesday morning. Whereas, Dwarka and Kalyanpur received 92 mm and 70 mm of rain respectively during this period.
According to the release, nine taluks of Jamnagar, Junagadh, Rajkot, Porbandar, and Kutch districts received more than 50 mm of rain during the said period. According to the SEOC, 54 taluks in Saurashtra and Kutch districts received more than 10 mm of rain in a 24-hour period ending Wednesday morning. State Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey said, “The cyclone is about 290 km from Kutch now. As a precautionary measure, we have evacuated about 50,000 people from the coastal areas and shifted them to safe shelter camps. The evacuation operation is still going on and by evening the remaining 5,000 people will be shifted to safer places.
Pandey told reporters in Gandhinagar that of the 50,000 people who were evacuated, 18,000 were shifted to camps in the Kutch district, while others were shifted to safer places in Junagadh, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Morbi, and Rajkot. has been delivered.
According to Pandey, 15 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 12 of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), 115 of the State Road and Building Department, and 397 of the State Electricity Department have been deployed in different coastal districts. “Officials from the Electricity and Road and Building Departments have reached the affected areas to restore power supply and connectivity. We have also deployed various teams equipped with HAM radio sets and satellite phones in the regional areas for better communication.

The IMD said in a bulletin that as the cyclone approaches the Gujarat coast on June 15, the intensity of rains will increase in the state and extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at a few places in Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, and Jamnagar. According to the bulletin, due to the cyclone, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Porbandar, Rajkot, Morbi, Junagadh, and the rest of the districts of Saurashtra and the North Gujarat region.
