New Delhi: Tata Motors, India’s leading automobile manufacturer, has launched the country’s first automatic CNG cars with twin-cylinder technology, offering a unique combination of performance, efficiency, and convenience. The company has opened bookings for the Tiago and Tigor iCNG AMT, which are based on the popular hatchback and sedan models, respectively. The iCNG AMT cars feature a dual-cylinder CNG system that allows for more boot space, as well as a single advanced ECU that ensures smooth switching between petrol and CNG modes. The cars also come with best-in-class safety features, such as micro switch, thermal incident protection, leak detection, and safe location of CNG cylinders.

The iCNG AMT cars were first showcased at the Auto Expo 2023, where Tata Motors displayed its innovative dual-cylinder CNG technology. The technology enables the placement of two CNG cylinders below the luggage area, instead of one large cylinder that occupies most of the boot space. This gives the iCNG AMT cars a practical advantage over other CNG cars in the market, as they offer more room for luggage and passengers. The technology also reduces the weight and cost of the CNG system, making it more affordable and efficient.

Another feature that sets the iCNG AMT cars apart from other CNG cars is the single advanced ECU, which controls the fuel injection and ignition of both petrol and CNG modes. The ECU ensures that the cars start directly in the CNG mode, saving fuel and time. It also enables effortless and jerk-free shifting between petrol and CNG modes, without any manual intervention. The ECU also optimizes the performance and mileage of the cars, depending on the driving conditions and fuel availability.

The iCNG AMT cars are available in five variants, with three for the Tiago and two for the Tigor. The Tiago iCNG AMT variants are XTA CNG, XZA+ CNG, and XZA NRG, while the Tigor iCNG AMT variants are XZA CNG and XZA+ CNG. The cars are powered by the 1.2L Revotron petrol engine, which has a 3-cylinder layout and produces 86 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque. The cars also come with top-of-the-line comfort and convenience features, such as a touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, steering-mounted controls, and rear parking camera.

The iCNG AMT cars also boast best-in-class safety features, which are designed to prevent and protect from any mishaps related to the CNG system. The cars have a micro switch that turns off the ignition when the fuel lid is opened and keeps it off until the lid is securely closed. This prevents any accidental sparks or flames that could ignite the CNG. The cars also have a thermal incident protection feature, which cuts off the CNG supply to the engine in case of a fire or overheating, and releases the gas from the cylinder directly into the atmosphere through a special nozzle. This reduces the risk of explosion or damage to the car and the passengers. The cars also have a leak detection feature, which senses any gas leak and switches from CNG to petrol mode automatically. The cars also have a safe location for CNG cylinders, which are placed under the load floor, away from any external impact or damage.
