Bangkok: Thailand officials on Thursday declared a strict emergency in the capital Bangkok. The protests that began under the leadership of the students turned into an unprecedented campaign, during which attempts were made to stop the royal convoy. The emergency was declared after this development.
Following the declaration of emergency, the anti-riot police dispersed a group of pro-democracy protesters camping overnight outside the Prime Minister’s office in the early hours of Thursday. The protesters are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan Ocha.
The protesters are demanding reforms in Thailand’s constitutional monarchy. He claims that it does not function properly in a democratic system. Several top leaders of the protesters have been detained.
Police said that 22 people have been arrested so far. Extensive demonstrations took place on Wednesday in an area of Bangkok, the display site not far from the grand temples and royal palaces here. The role of the royal family of Thailand in the country’s political structure has been questioned in the student movement.
