Extradition of fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi clear

New Delhi: The UK Home Department has given permission to extradition diamond businessman Nirav Modi to India in a bank fraud of Rs 13,000 crore. Officials gave this information on Friday. Modi, along with his maternal uncle Mehul Choksi, is accused of cheating Punjab National Bank.

It is notable that on 25 February last, the Westminster Magistrate’s court approved Modi’s extradition. The court’s decision was conveyed to the UK Home Department, on the basis of which permission was given for extradition of Nirav Modi.

Nirav Modi was arrested on 19 March 2019 on an extradition warrant and was involved through video links from Wandsworth Jail during several hearings in connection with the extradition case. Nirav Modi is currently lodged in a jail in London.

Nirav’s sister Poorvi and her husband Mayank Mehta have become public witnesses in the two billion dollars Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. Nirav and his maternal uncle Mehul Choksi are the main accused in the case. The couple moved the court in February to stay the non-bailable warrant issued against them. He had given the basis for this that he had become a government witness in the case.
