Seoul: North Korea leader Kim Jong Un has been made the General Secretary of the ruling Workers Party. His late father and grandfather have also previously held this position. Perhaps this step has been taken with the aim of further strengthening their strength amidst increasing economic challenges. Government media gave this information on Monday.

He has been given this position in the First Congress of the ruling party since 2016. At the meeting, Kim vowed to make more modern nuclear weapons, unveiled the goals of economic development, and reshuffled party officials. But observers are skeptical that this would lead to a concrete solution to North Korea’s hardships, including the economic shock caused by the Coronavirus, natural disasters, and repeated US-led sanctions.

According to the official Central News Agency of Korea, Congress on Sunday awarded Kim a new position on the sixth day of the meeting. The Congress statement said Kim had “carried out the historic mission of completing the country’s nuclear construction plan.” Kim is already the party’s top leader.

He was named the President of the party during the Party Congress in 2016 and before that he led the party with the rank of First Secretary. But in a dynasty-ruled country, the post of Secretary-General is considered to be more important symbolically because the post was held by his father Kim Jong Il and grandfather Kim Il Sung.

When Kim Jong Un assumed leadership of the country after his father’s demise in 2011, some foreign experts raised doubts about his hold on power. But on Friday, Kim, 37, tightened her grip on power by hanging some high-profile people and removing her opponents.
