New Delhi: 2 new teams will be added from the next season of IPL (IPL-2022), the world’s richest cricket league. Out of these, the name of the Lucknow franchise was officially announced on Monday. The name of the new team will be Lucknow Super Giants which is owned by RP Sanjeev Goenka Group.

The Lucknow franchise had asked its fans to suggest names on social media, but after a while, the new name was announced. The owner of the franchise, Dr. Sanjeev Goenka said in a video message, ‘Thank you very much for suggesting the name. Several lakh people gave suggestions regarding the new name, on the basis of which the name Lucknow Super Giants has been chosen.

KL Rahul will be the captain of the Lucknow franchise, who has been roped in with the team for a whopping sum of Rs 17 crore. Earlier, he was handling the captaincy of Punjab Kings. Rahul has also become the most expensive player of IPL so far. He recently took charge of the Indian team against South Africa in the ODI series. However, the Indian team had to face defeat in all three ODIs of the series.

Let us tell you that earlier Goenka Group had bought the Pune franchise in the year 2016. Then the team’s Rising Pune Supergiants was kept. The very next year it was changed to ‘Rising Pune Supergiant’. In fact, then Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended and in their place, the Pune franchise and Gujarat Lions were included.

Apart from Rahul, the Lucknow franchise has also included Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and uncapped Indian leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi. Stoinis will be given Rs 9.2 crore while Ravi Bishnoi will be paid Rs 4 crore. With this, the franchise has a purse of Rs 59 crore left for the auction, which is to be held in Bengaluru from February 12 to 13.
