New Delhi: In a significant appointment within the Indian military ranks, the central government has announced Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi as the incoming Army Chief. He is set to assume the role on June 30, succeeding General Manoj Pandey upon the conclusion of his tenure.

Lieutenant General Dwivedi, a decorated officer with the Param Seva Medal (PVSM) and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), brings a wealth of experience from his extensive service in Jammu and Kashmir. The Defense Ministry’s announcement highlighted his 40 years of commendable service, marked by a variety of roles across command, staff, instructional, and international assignments.

His leadership roles have been diverse, including commanding the 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Regiment, leading the 26 Sector Assam Rifles Brigade, serving as DIG of Assam Rifles (East), and heading the 9 Corps. These positions reflect his strategic acumen and operational expertise.

The government’s decision to appoint Lieutenant General Dwivedi aligns with the tradition of seniority-based succession. This comes after a notable extension of General Pandey’s service by one month, just days before his scheduled retirement.

Educational Background of Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi

Lieutenant General Dwivedi’s academic journey began at Sainik School, Rewa, laying the foundation for his illustrious military career. His pursuit of knowledge continued at the National Defense College and the US Army War College. His academic accolades include being named a ‘Distinguished Fellow’ at the USAWC, Carlisle, USA, an honor equivalent to the prestigious NDC course.
