The storm of protest that erupted in Bangladesh has blown away her political chair, forcing her to flee the country. Currently, Sheikh Hasina resides in the safe confines of Hindon Airbase in India. But why was she compelled to leave? Was her life genuinely in danger in Bangladesh? And did her brother-in-law betray her or save her life?
The Intriguing Relationship with Her Brother-in-Law
Let’s delve into the dynamics between Sheikh Hasina and her brother-in-law. The current Army Chief in Bangladesh, Walker-uz-Zaman, is Sheikh Hasina’s brother-in-law. His wife, a cousin of the former Prime Minister, connects their family ties. Interestingly, Walker-uz-Zaman’s father-in-law, General Mustafizur Rahman, previously served as the Chief of Army Staff from 1997 to 2000. Mustafizur Rahman was Sheikh Hasina’s uncle, further intertwining their destinies.
The Unfolding Crisis and the Army’s Role
The pivotal events of August 5 shed light on the crisis. On August 4, violence erupted during protests in Bangladesh, resulting in approximately 100 deaths. The demonstrations targeted Sheikh Hasina’s government, pushing the situation to a breaking point. Faced with mounting pressure, Sheikh Hasina declared a nationwide curfew and shut down internet services. The army and police were given carte blanche to quell the protests, but the situation spiralled out of control.
The Army Chief’s Urgent Intervention
Early on August 5, chaos erupted at Sheikh Hasina’s residence. The chiefs of all branches of the armed forces converged there. Sheikh Hasina’s sister was also present during this critical juncture. Army Chief Walker-uz-Zaman and his counterparts urged Sheikh Hasina to resign. They believed that stopping the protests was no longer feasible, and drastic measures were necessary. However, not all army chiefs supported this approach. Walker-uz-Zaman and others implored Sheikh Hasina to step down and leave the country, but her resolve remained unyielding.
Desperate Measures and a Son’s Persuasion
In a private conversation lasting 20 minutes, Sheikh Hasina’s sister attempted to sway her decision. Still, Sheikh Hasina clung to her position. Fearing for her safety, Army Chief Walker-uz-Zaman took extraordinary steps. He urgently contacted Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeev Wajed, who resides in Virginia. The emotional plea from her son finally convinced Sheikh Hasina to resign and seek refuge outside Bangladesh.
