AHMEDABAD: Heavy rains lashed several parts of south Gujarat, raising the water level of some rivers, and inundating various low-lying areas. More than 700 people were shifted to safer places in Navsari and Valsad districts. Officials gave this information on Sunday. He said that some low-lying areas of Valsad were flooded after the water level of the Orsang river rose. Since the Cauvery and Ambika rivers are flowing above the danger mark, Navsari district officials are also on alert.

Valsad and Navsari districts received very heavy rains on Saturday night and Sunday morning, officials said. He said that Chhota Udaipur and Narmada districts also received heavy rains, due to which rivers were in spate and low-lying areas were flooded. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the Dang, Navsari, and Valsad districts of South Gujarat during the next five days. The IMD has said that many other districts of South Gujarat and Saurashtra are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period.

District Magistrate Amit Prakash Yadav said, “Cauvery and Ambika rivers are flowing above the danger mark in Navsari district. We are evacuating people from low-lying areas. So far more than 300 people have been shifted to safer places and the operation is on with the help of a company of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Over 400 people were evacuated to safer places after the water level of Orsang river in Valsad rose and low-lying areas were flooded, officials said. He said that there was some relief in Valsad on Sunday and the water level receded, after which people started returning to their homes.

Several dams in the south and central Gujarat and Saurashtra region have been flooded and rivers in spate due to heavy rains since Saturday. Several rivers are flowing close to the danger mark, prompting the concerned administration to be on alert.

According to data shared by the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC), Dharampur taluka in Valsad district and Vansada in Navsari received 216 and 213 mm of rain, respectively, in the 24-hour period till 6 am on Sunday.
