History
The United Nations started celebrating Women’s Day on 8 March 1975. But, before that, in the year 1909 itself, an exercise had been done to celebrate it. In fact, in the year 1909, for the first time in America, Women’s Day was celebrated on 28 February. The Socialist Party of America chose this day to honor the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York. At the same time, Russian women, celebrating Women’s Day on 28 February for the first time, registered a protest against the First World War.

International Womens Day

Russian women went on strike in 1917 demanding bread and peace. The strike began on the last Sunday of February. It was a historic strike and when the Czar of Russia left power, the Provisional Government gave women the right to vote. Women in Europe took out rallies on 8 March to support peace activists.
