Chennai: Cyclone Fengal has unleashed relentless rains across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, creating flood-like conditions and resulting in significant loss of life and property. With areas like Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry facing the brunt of the disaster, the government has issued a red alert and implemented measures to safeguard citizens, including shutting down educational institutions.

Schools and Colleges Closed as Red Alert Issued

Puducherry Education Minister A. Namachivayam announced a precautionary holiday for all government and private schools and colleges on December 3. The decision comes as heavy rains, triggered by Cyclone Fengal, continue to batter the region, disrupting daily life and posing severe risks to public safety.

Massive Damage to Crops and Livelihoods

Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangaswamy revealed that the state received an unprecedented 48% rainfall within a short span, devastating over 10,000 hectares of agricultural land. Farmers are set to receive ₹30,000 per hectare in compensation for crop losses, while additional relief measures include ₹5,000 for all ration card holders affected by the cyclone.

The fishing community has also suffered significant losses, with 50 boats reported damaged. The government has pledged ₹10,000 per boat for repairs to support those whose livelihoods have been disrupted.

Floods Submerge Homes, Rescue Operations Intensify

Severe flooding in Puducherry’s NR Nagar has submerged over 200 houses, leaving residents stranded. The Shankarparani River has overflowed, exacerbating the situation. The Indian Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have launched extensive rescue operations to evacuate people to safer locations.

Government’s Relief Measures in Full Swing

In addition to direct financial assistance, the Puducherry government is mobilizing resources to aid affected citizens. Relief camps have been set up, and emergency supplies are being distributed to ensure basic needs are met. Chief Minister Rangaswamy emphasized the government’s commitment to compensating for public losses and restoring normalcy at the earliest.
