A large number of people attended Hadi’s funeral prayer and paid their respects at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka, where mourners began gathering from early morning.

Funeral Ceremony and Burial

As per his family’s wishes, Hadi was buried near the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, a moment that evoked strong emotions among his supporters and followers. Within hours, the road in front of the Parliament building was filled with people, creating a sea of mourners. During the funeral prayer, many were seen draped in the national flag, while a section of the crowd chanted slogans demanding justice for Hadi’s killers.

National Mourning and Security Measures

Following Hadi’s funeral, the Bangladeshi government under Muhammad Yunus declared Saturday a day of national mourning. The national flag was flown at half-mast across the country, and special prayers were held in mosques and other places of worship. Saturday was relatively peaceful after two days of protests by Inqilab Moncho supporters in the capital.

For security reasons, a heavy contingent of Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) and police forces was deployed around the Parliament building and other key areas of Dhaka before the funeral prayer. As per the instructions of the Inqilab Moncho, only the Bangladeshi national flag was displayed during the funeral, maintaining a unified and patriotic atmosphere.

The Assassination and Aftermath

It is worth noting that Sharif Osman Hadi had announced his intention to contest the upcoming general election as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency. However, on December 12, he was shot dead at close range while traveling in a rickshaw in the Bijoynagar area of the capital. According to the police, two attackers on a motorcycle carried out the attack and fled the scene.

Following Hadi’s murder, protests and unrest were witnessed in several parts of Bangladesh, leading to heightened security measures across the nation. The National Cyber Security Agency has expressed concern over content promoting violence or terrorism on social media platforms.

Cyber Security Measures and Content Monitoring

The agency has urged people to report such posts, and according to the government, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has stated that objectionable and inflammatory content can be reported directly via WhatsApp and email. These complaints will be initially investigated by the National Cyber Security Agency, after which they will be forwarded to the relevant social media platforms through the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

The government is taking these measures seriously to prevent further violence and maintain law and order during this sensitive period, while also addressing the growing concern over digital content that could incite unrest.
