Technological transformation has reached the heart of South Korea’s spiritual landscape with the introduction of the world’s first humanoid robot monk. Unveiled in Seoul, the robot is not merely a mechanical novelty but a meticulously designed participant in sacred rituals, intended to bridge the gap between ancient traditions and the modern world.
Design and Performance at Jogye Temple
The robot, named Gabi, was introduced to the public during a special ceremony at the renowned Jogye Temple just before Buddha Purnima. Standing approximately four feet tall and wearing traditional monastic robes, Gabi participated in mantra recitations while holding a string of 108 prayer beads.
In a notable exchange during the ceremony, a human monk asked the robot if it would abide by the teachings of the Buddha, to which Gabi replied with a sincere “Yes”. The robot successfully performed complex duties, including bowing in reverence and completing ritual walks around the temple grounds with its hands clasped in prayer.
Technical Foundations and Philosophy
Gabi was developed by a Chinese firm using the sophisticated Unitree G1 robotic platform, allowing it to sit, stand, and move with human-like fluidity. The name “Gabi” carries a deep philosophical meaning, combining “Siddhartha,” the childhood name of Gautam Buddha, with “Jabi,” the Korean term for compassion.
Ethical Guidelines and Future Outlook
To ensure Gabi operates within Buddhist ethics, developers utilized AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini to formulate a specific set of rules. These spiritual guidelines mandate that the robot must respect all living beings, speak the truth, and obey human instructions, while also including practical maintenance rules such as avoiding overcharging its battery. Temple organizations believe Gabi represents a vital solution to the current shortage of monks and serves as a unique medium to attract younger people toward the Buddhist faith in an increasingly tech, driven society.
