The Meteorological Department says that from March to May this year, North-West India and North-East India including Delhi-NCR are likely to be warmer than normal. IMD Director General M. Mohapatra said that this time the will be above normal. Mohapatra said that the heatwave is more intense during El Nio.

The Meteorological Department said that changes in sea surface temperature conditions in the Pacific and the Indian oceans are known to affect the Indian climate. He said that the Meteorological Department is monitoring the changes in the sea surface.

According to the report of NBT Online, the Meteorological Department has indicated that the frequency of heatwave will decrease in March in ‘above normal temperature’ areas like North West and Central India (Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh). Maximum temperatures will remain high over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, major parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and adjoining areas of Madhya Pradesh Maharashtra. A heatwave is declared in the plains when the maximum temperature exceeds 40 °C and is at least 4.5 °C above normal.

Along with Delhi, there will be heat in West and Central India too
Above normal maximum temperatures are very likely to occur over many areas over adjoining areas of West and Central India, northwest India, and northern parts of North East India. However, most parts of the South Peninsula and East and Northeast India and North Plains are likely to see below-normal maximum temperatures.

Last year, the heat of the month of March had made people feel like May-June. In terms of maximum temperature, March was the hottest month in 121 years. According to the IMD, during March last year, the monthly average maximum, minimum, and mean temperatures across the country were recorded at 32.65 °C, 19.95 °C, and 26.30 °C, respectively. Earlier in 2004, the temperature in March was 33.09 degrees Celsius. Whereas in 2010 it was 32.22 degrees Celsius. At the same time, in 2021, the temperature in March was recorded above 40 degrees Celsius in many parts of the country.

Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 43.1 degrees Celsius on July 1 last year. The Meteorological Department said that this was the highest temperature in Delhi in July in the last 90 years. The Meteorological Department had announced a heatwave amidst the continuous heatwave that has been going on for three days.
