New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the new Terminal One at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Despite the completion of construction, the terminal has not commenced flight operations.
Operational Delay:
Sources indicate a two to three-month wait before operations begin. The delay stems from the need to complete the Operational Readiness and Airport Transition (ORAT) certification—a two-phase process ensuring the terminal’s technology, equipment, services, and staffing are fully operational.
Phase One – Technology and Equipment Testing:
The first phase involves rigorous testing of all technology and equipment, from the check-in counters to the aerobridges. This phase is crucial to ensure seamless integration of various systems.
Phase Two – Trial Run with Agencies:
The second phase includes a coordinated trial run with all agencies involved in airport operations. This collaborative effort aims to identify and rectify any systemic flaws before the terminal becomes operational.
Security Review:
Following ORAT certification, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will conduct a comprehensive security review of the terminal. Any security gaps identified will be addressed to ensure the safety of the terminal.
Safety Equipment Inspection:
CISF will also test all security equipment, including metal detectors, X-ray machines, and CCTV cameras. The deployment strategy for security personnel will be finalized during this phase.
Civil Aviation Security Clearance:
Concurrently, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) will issue airport entry passes to staff involved in terminal operations, ensuring all personnel are cleared for their roles.
Dummy Trial Runs:
Once these preparatory steps are completed, dummy trial runs will be conducted to test systems like check-in, baggage handling, and aerobridge operations. These trials are critical for the final assessment of the terminal’s readiness.
The decision on which airlines and flights will operate from Terminal One is pending. Meanwhile, flight operations continue at Terminals One-D, Two, and Three. The meticulous approach to opening Terminal One underscores the commitment to safety and efficiency in air travel.
