New Delhi: As mid-November passes, North India is yet to experience the full arrival of winter. While mornings and evenings bring a hint of coolness, afternoons remain humid and uncomfortable. Meanwhile, southern states are on high alert for heavy rainfall, and dense fog poses visibility challenges in several northern and eastern regions.
IMD Issues Rainfall Alert for South India
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and South Interior Karnataka today. Sporadic rain accompanied by thunder is also likely in these regions. Residents are advised to stay cautious as intermittent downpours could lead to waterlogging and disruption of daily activities.
North India Faces Foggy Mornings
In contrast, northern states are grappling with dense fog, impacting visibility and travel safety. The IMD predicts very dense fog in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi. Similar conditions are expected in Western Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, and Jharkhand, primarily during the early morning hours.
Three-Day Weather Outlook: Rain and Fog to Persist
- Rainfall in the South: From November 16 to 18, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and coastal Andhra Pradesh are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall with sporadic thunder and lightning. Heavy rainfall is forecast for isolated areas on November 16.
- Fog in the North: Punjab and Haryana will witness dense to very dense fog till November 16 morning, followed by dense fog persisting for an additional day. Uttar Pradesh is likely to experience dense fog for the next two days. Foggy conditions are also predicted for Western Rajasthan until November 17 morning.
Weather Implications
The prolonged humid afternoons in North India are causing discomfort, while the dense fog poses risks for road and rail travel. Authorities have urged commuters to exercise caution during early mornings, especially in regions where visibility drops significantly.
In the southern states, residents should prepare for potential disruptions due to heavy rainfall, including localized flooding and slippery roads.
Safety Advisory
- For Fog: Use fog lights while driving, avoid overspeeding, and stay updated on traffic alerts in fog-prone regions.
- For Rain: Secure outdoor items, avoid venturing into waterlogged areas, and monitor local weather updates for real-time advisories.
As India transitions into winter, the contrasting weather patterns in the north and south highlight the country’s vast climatic diversity. While North Indians await the onset of the winter chill, the southern states gear up for intense rainfall and the associated challenges.
