Lukashenko takes over as President of Belarus despite disputed elections

Minsk: Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko took over for the sixth time in a ceremony without prior notice. The ceremony took place on Wednesday in the capital Minsk, according to the news of the official news agency Beltra.

Hundreds of top government officials attended the ceremony. The event was followed by protests on August 9 after the official results of the elections. Lukashenko, who had held the post for the last 26 years, was declared re-elected in these elections. In Belarus, the opposition challenged these elections as not being fair.
