New Delhi: Chandrayaan-3, India’s ambitious lunar mission, is nearing its final stage after overcoming many hurdles. The whole country and the world are eagerly waiting for Chandrayaan to touch down on the moon’s surface on August 23. However, this date may change depending on the condition of the lander and the landing site, according to ISRO’s Nilesh M. Desai.
Desai said on Monday that if the lander of Chandrayaan-3 does not find a suitable place to land, then the landing may be delayed till August 27. He said that this is ISRO’s ‘Plan B’. He also said that two hours before Chandrayaan’s landing on the moon, they will assess the status of the lander and the moon. Based on that, they will decide whether to proceed with the landing or not. He said that they will try their best to land the lander on August 23.
Former ISRO chairman G. Madhavan Nair said that landing is a very complex process and that they missed it in the last 2 kilometers in the Chandrayaan-2 mission. He said that there are many things that have to work together, such as thrusters, sensors, altimeters, computer software, and so on. He said that any mistake anywhere could cause trouble.
ISRO expects the lander module along with the rover to land on the lunar surface at around 6.04 pm on Wednesday evening.
