New Delhi: Vespa, the scooter brand of Italian auto company Piaggio, is soon going to enter the electric vehicle segment of India. Vespa’s retro-aesthetic design makes it recognized as a luxury scooter brand from Italy. The company has now shown interest in the EV space and wants to introduce an ecosystem in India that will become self-sufficient in the future after the Government of India decides to stop subsidies for EVs.
Piaggio may also bring another sporty brand Aprilia under its banner. As of now, the price (or even the launch date in India) of the Vespa electric scooter in India is yet to be revealed. Talking to the media, Piaggio India’s Managing Director Diego Graffi said that they want to create such an EV ecosystem in India, which can survive even without subsidy. Due to the FAME II subsidy, the cost of electric vehicles in India remains low.
Diego Graffi said, “We don’t want to enter the market just to take entry. We will have a powertrain, which will be based on our specifications. We don’t want to take anything off the shelf. So it is taking more time.” Piaggio makes three-wheeler vehicles in India. But its Vespa and Aprilia brands also make two-wheeler vehicles in Italy. The company has said that it wants to introduce an electric scooter in India under the Vespa brand.
Earlier, the company had showcased the Vespa Elettrica electric scooter at the Auto Expo 2020. It gives a range of up to 100 km on a single charge. It will take four hours to fully charge the battery. However, the company had not revealed anything about the Euro-spec Electrica before this. The peak power output of this electric scooter from Vespa is 4 kW. It is expected that the company can launch the updated version of this scooter in India as well.
Electric will be given a 4 KW electric motor, which will generate 5.36 horsepower peak power and 20-newton meter peak torque. This scooter has been designed by the company in Italy and it is expected that this scooter will set a new trend in the two-wheeler segment. Being an electric scooter, the Vespa Electrica will cost a bit more. It has been claimed in different media reports that its price in the Indian market can be around 90 thousand rupees. The company will launch it in the standard model only.
