Annapolis: Renowned author Wes Moore has won the Democratic Party’s primary in the race for the governorship of Maryland and will face Republican Dan Cox in the general election. Right-wing leader Cox has been backed by former President Donald Trump.

Moore, the author of the bestselling book ‘The Other Wes Moore’ and former chief executive officer (CEO) of an NGO, defeated several stalwart Democratic leaders including Tom Perez and Peter Francott. Moore will face Cox, a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, in November. Moore’s campaign was also joined by celebrity Oprah Winfrey, who hosted a fundraising event.

Moore also has the support of Maryland MP Steny Hoyer in the House of Representatives. Cox was declared the winner of the Republican Party primary on Thursday night. The Democratic Party took until Friday to make a decision because the gap was small and too many ballots were mailed.

Moore was considered a strong contender in the Democratic Party. Moore, as CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, an organization working to eradicate poverty, distributed more than $600 million to help underprivileged families.
