KHUNTI: Three former students of St Michael School in Jharkhand’s Khunti district were arrested after attacking the institution’s principal during a botched robbery attempt. The incident occurred on October 21, with the principal, Father Benedict Barla, found unconscious and critically injured the following morning. He is currently undergoing treatment in Ranchi.

According to Khunti Police, the suspects entered the school premises with the intent to steal cash and a mobile phone. However, they were unprepared for the principal’s presence. When confronted, the accused allegedly panicked and fled the scene, fearing identification by Barla.

Recovery of Stolen Items and Ongoing Investigation

Police have recovered cash and the principal’s mobile phone from two of the arrested minors. A fourth suspect, also a minor, is still at large. Khunti Superintendent of Police Rishabh Garg stated that the accused were familiar with the school premises and had previously stolen small amounts from Barla, ranging between Rs 500 to Rs 1,000.

Principal’s Medical Condition and Religious Response

Vicar General of the Koti Diocese, Bisu Benjamin, reported that Barla’s vital signs have stabilized. However, his brain injury remains a critical concern. Doctors are working to assess the extent of the damage and determine further treatment options.

Christian groups have condemned the attack, calling for swift justice. The incident has drawn attention from religious leaders and local authorities, highlighting the vulnerability of educational institutions in rural areas.

Context: Missionary Schools in Jharkhand

St Michael School, located in Khunti district, is one of several missionary-run educational institutions in Jharkhand. These schools often serve as critical hubs for education in rural areas, where access to formal schooling is limited. Missionary schools typically operate under the guidance of religious organizations and are supported by both local communities and international funding sources.

The attack has sparked discussions about the security of such institutions, particularly in regions where law enforcement resources are stretched thin. While missionary schools have historically played a vital role in providing education to underprivileged populations, incidents like this underscore the need for enhanced security measures and community engagement.

What Happens Next?

The investigation into the attack is ongoing, with police examining CCTV footage to identify the remaining suspect. The fourth minor, who is still at large, faces potential legal consequences once apprehended.

The case has also drawn attention from local and national Christian organizations, who are advocating for the protection of religious educational institutions. The Koti Diocese has called for a thorough inquiry into the incident and emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of educators in such schools.

As for Father Barla, his medical condition remains a concern. Doctors are closely monitoring his brain function and may require further treatment in the coming days. The school community is awaiting updates on his recovery, while authorities work to bring all involved parties to justice.
