Indian films ‘Shivamma’ and ‘The Winter Within’ get awards at Busan Film Festival

New Delhi: Kannada film ‘Shivamma’ and actor-director Aamir Bashir’s ‘The Winter Within’ have won awards at the 2022 Busan International Film Festival. The film ‘Shivamma’ directed by filmmaker Jaishankar Aaryar won the ‘New Currents’ award with the Korean title ‘A Wild Roomer’. Bashir’s “The Winter Within” won the KB ‘New Currents Audience’ award during the closing ceremony of the festival on Friday.

Sharanamma Chetty and Chennamma Abbagere have worked in ‘Shivamma’. The film is produced by Rishabh Shetty. According to the festival’s organizers, the ‘New Currents Award’ is given to the two best films selected from the first or second feature films of new Asian directors presented in the New Currents category of the festival. It carries prize money of US$30,000 for each film. “We appreciated the originality and depth with which the director was able to tell this contemporary story,” he added.

Bengaluru-based Jaishankar Aaryar celebrated the victory of his debut film in a post on Instagram. The filmmaker said, “Happy to share this wonderful news. The New Currents Award has been given to ‘Shivamma’ at the 27th Busan Film Festival. This is the first Kannada film to win the honor.

‘The Winter Within’ is Bashir’s second foray into direction after making his debut with the 2010 National Award-winning Urdu film ‘Harud/Harud’. In the ‘New Currents Audience Award’, a prize of US$ 18,000 is given to the director.
