New Delhi: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who resigned and fled her violence-stricken country on Monday, is currently in India as she awaits political asylum in a third country. Sources reveal that Hasina, 76, is seeking asylum in the UK, accompanied by her sister, Rehana, who holds UK citizenship.

Hasina’s Asylum Request in the UK Pending

The former Prime Minister fled Bangladesh amid massive and deadly anti-government protests that have gripped the nation for the past month. While Hasina has formally requested asylum in the UK, there has been no confirmation from British authorities yet. Her sister Rehana, who is the younger daughter of Bangladesh’s founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and mother to British MP Tulip Siddiq, is traveling with her.

Arrival in India: Meeting with NSA Doval

Hasina’s escape from Bangladesh involved a Bangladesh Air Force C-130 transport aircraft, which landed at Ghaziabad’s Hindon Air Base around 6:30 PM. The Indian Air Force and security agencies closely monitored the aircraft’s journey from Bangladeshi airspace to its arrival in India.

Upon her arrival, India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, along with senior military officials, met with Hasina at the airbase, ensuring her full security. Plans are in place to move her to a secure location within the national capital as she awaits further developments.

Next Steps: Potential Flight to London

Reports suggest that Hasina might fly to London, although no definitive response has been received from the UK regarding her stay. Initially, it was speculated that she would take a commercial flight from India to London, but this remains unconfirmed.
