Mary Kom Resigns as India’s Chef de Mission for Paris 2024 Olympics

New Delhi: In a surprising turn of events, MC Mary Kom, the six-time world champion boxer, has resigned from her recently appointed role as India’s Chef de Mission for the Paris Olympics 2024. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President, PT Usha, confirmed that Mary Kom submitted her resignation due to personal reasons, which has been accepted with a heavy heart.

Mary Kom, who was set to lead the Indian contingent in the administrative capacity at the upcoming Olympic Games scheduled from July 26 to August 11, expressed her regret in a heartfelt letter. She wrote, “Serving the country is a matter of pride, and I was mentally prepared for the role. However, due to personal reasons, I am unable to fulfill this responsibility.” She continued, “It is with embarrassment that I step back, as it is not in my nature to do so, but I am left with no choice.”

The decorated athlete, who clinched a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, assured that her support and cheers for the Indian athletes would remain unwavering. PT Usha, in her statement, conveyed sadness over Mary Kom’s departure but reiterated respect for her decision and privacy. The IOA is set to announce a replacement soon.

In the same vein, the IOA had previously announced the appointment of Shiva Keshavan, a six-time Winter Olympian, as the deputy chief of the campaign. Additionally, Sharath Kamal, a seasoned table tennis player and Commonwealth Games champion has been named as India’s male flag bearer for the prestigious event. The announcement for the female flag bearer is anticipated to be made shortly.
