New Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Player Auction was held on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, in Dubai, where eight franchises bid for 56 players out of a pool of 292. The auction witnessed some intense bidding wars, surprising picks, and record-breaking deals, as the teams tried to bolster their squads for the upcoming season.
The biggest headline of the day was the Australian pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, who were part of the World Cup-winning team in 2023. Starc became the most expensive player in IPL history, as he was snapped up by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a whopping INR 24.75 Crore, surpassing the previous record of INR 22.5 Crore set by Yuvraj Singh in 2015. Cummins, who was also the captain of the Australian team, was not far behind, as he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for INR 20.5 Crore, making him the second-most expensive player ever.
The third-highest bid of the day went to New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell, who was acquired by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for INR 14 Crore, after a fierce bidding war with Mumbai Indians (MI). Mitchell, who had a base price of INR 50 Lakh, had a stellar World Cup campaign, scoring 237 runs and taking 11 wickets in nine matches. He also impressed in the recently concluded T20 World Cup, where he scored 118 runs and took six wickets in six matches.
Other notable buys of the day included West Indies all-rounder Rovman Powell, who was bought by Rajasthan Royals (RR) for INR 7.4 Crore, Tamil Nadu batsman Shahrukh Khan, who was picked by Gujarat Titans (GT) for INR 7.4 Crore, and Delhi Capitals (DC) all-rounder Harshal Patel, who was purchased by Punjab Kings (PK) for INR 11.75 Crore.
The auction also saw some surprising snubs, as some of the big names went unsold. These included England captain Eoin Morgan, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma, West Indies captain Kieron Pollard, Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka, and Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan. Some of the other prominent players who did not find any takers were James Vince, Jason Holder, Tim Southee, Sam Billings, and Ben Cutting.
The auction also witnessed some interesting trades, as some of the players switched teams before the bidding process. Hardik Pandya and Cameron Green were traded from GT to MI and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) respectively, while Avesh Khan and Devdutt Padikkal were traded from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to RR and DC respectively. Romario Shepherd was traded from LSG to MI, while Mayank Dagar and Shahbaz Ahamad were traded from SRH and RCB to RCB and SRH respectively.
