Chennai: Customs officials on Monday recovered around 1,588 grams of gold brought from Dubai and Kuwait at the airport here. Officials said that the value of the recovered gold is around Rs 66.34 lakh. He told that this gold was brought from Kuwait by hiding it in a glass frame and from Dubai in an iron hammer.

He said that two people have been arrested in this connection. He said that in the first incident, a passenger who had arrived here from Dubai was stopped at the exit gate by customs officials on the basis of intelligence inputs. On scrutiny and investigation, an iron hammer along with gold was found hidden in his bag.

A release issued by the Principal Commissioner of the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs in Chennai said the hammer was smashed and gold was recovered from its inside. About 341 grams of gold, valued at Rs 14.25 lakh, was seized.

According to the release, in the second incident, 1,247 grams of gold concealed in a glass frame was recovered from a passenger who had come from Kuwait. The price of gold is Rs 52.09 lakh, the release said.
