New Delhi: The Islamabad High Court has granted bail to former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana case, which involves the illegal sale of gifts received by them during their tenure. The court has set aside the verdict of the lower court, which had sentenced Imran Khan to three years in prison and barred him from politics for five years. Imran Khan, who is the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), will be released from jail today. He had challenged the trial court’s decision in the High Court.
The High Court bench comprising Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri delivered the order after hearing the appeal of the former Prime Minister. The Chief Justice had earlier remarked that the trial court had acted wrongly, raising hopes for Imran Khan’s relief. Imran Khan and his family are accused of selling the gifts they received as prime minister between 2018 and 2022. The case also prevents him from contesting the upcoming elections.
Imran Khan’s lawyer Latif Khosa completed his arguments against the sentence in the High Court on Thursday. He had contended that the verdict against Imran was hasty and flawed. He had requested the court to quash the sentence. The court had reserved its order in the Toshakhana case on Monday after hearing all the parties.
Imran Khan is also facing serious charges of leaking confidential information. The investigating agencies are questioning him in jail as well. The government had informed the Supreme Court of Pakistan that Imran Khan was being served chicken and mutton in jail, which had sparked a controversy.
