New Delhi: Chinese automaker BYD has cemented its place among the world’s top electric vehicle manufacturers, thanks in large part to the runaway success of its compact, budget-friendly Seagull hatchback. Launched just over two years ago, the Seagull has already crossed the 1 million sales milestone a feat that has sent shockwaves through the global EV industry.

What Makes the BYD Seagull So Popular?

The Seagull’s irresistible blend of affordability, practicality, and modern features has made it a hit, especially in price-sensitive markets. With a starting price of just 69,800 Yuan (about ₹8 lakh), it offers a compelling entry point for first-time EV buyers. Its compact design makes it ideal for city driving, while its feature list and range have helped it outshine rivals.

In May 2025 alone, BYD dispatched 60,131 Seagulls, outselling not just electric competitors but also several popular petrol models. At one point in 2024, it even surpassed the Tesla Model Y to become China’s top-selling EV a remarkable achievement for a newcomer in such a competitive market.

European Expansion: Meet the Dolphin Surf

Riding on its domestic success, BYD has introduced the Seagull to Europe under the name Dolphin Surf. The European variant is available in three trims Active, Boost, and Comfort catering to a range of needs and budgets:

  • Active Trim: 30 kWh battery, ideal for urban commutes.
  • Boost & Comfort Trims: 43.2 kWh battery, offering extended range and enhanced features.

According to the WLTP standard, the Dolphin Surf can travel up to 507 km on a single charge, making it one of the longest-range vehicles in its class. It also boasts DC fast-charging capability, allowing the battery to go from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes perfect for drivers on the go.

Competing With the Best

The BYD Seagull/Dolphin Surf is now challenging established players like the Volkswagen ID.2 and Fiat 500e in the compact EV segment. Its combination of price, range, and charging speed is setting new benchmarks and forcing competitors to rethink their strategies.
