Stampede at Hathras

Hathras: A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded during a religious gathering in Hathras district, where over 120 people lost their lives in a stampede. The event was organized by the self-styled preacher, Bhole Baba (also known as Narayan Sakar Hari), and attended by approximately 50,000 devotees.

The Satsang and the Chaos

  • Overcrowding: The incident occurred at Phulrai village near Mandi of Sikandrarau. As Bhole Baba concluded his Satsang, chaos erupted due to massive overcrowding. Attendees, desperate for his blessings, surged forward, leading to a tragic crush.
  • Baba’s Elusive Absence: Despite intense police efforts, Bhole Baba remains elusive. Authorities have deployed officers outside his ashram, but there’s no trace of him since the accident. DSP Mainpuri Sunil Kumar confirmed that Baba was neither present yesterday nor today.
  • Canceled Satsangs: Two upcoming Satsangs in Agra scheduled from July 4 to 11 in Saiyaan and from July 13 to 23 in Shastripuram have been canceled.

CM Yogi’s Response

  • Judicial Inquiry: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a judicial inquiry led by a retired High Court judge. The investigation aims to uncover whether the stampede was an accident or part of a conspiracy. Retired officials from the administration and police will also be involved.
  • SIT Investigation: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the Additional Director General of Police of Agra is examining the incident. Their preliminary report sheds light on critical details.

The SDM’s Report

  • Permission and Presence: The SDM who granted permission for the Satsang was present at the venue during the tragedy. The pandal hosted over two lakh people, and Bhole Baba’s departure triggered a rush of devotees seeking his blessings. Unfortunately, the situation escalated when people waiting on the road divider surged toward his vehicle.

As the nation mourns this devastating loss, questions remain: Was it an accident or a conspiracy? Who bears responsibility? The judicial inquiry aims to find answers and ensure justice for the victims.
