ISLAMABAD: A report by the United Nations Security Council has drawn attention to the continuing threat to Pakistan’s security from the Afghanistan-based Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and said That the chances of success of the ongoing peace process with the dreaded terrorist organization are slim.

The annual report of the Monitoring Team of the Taliban Sanctions Committee 1988 outlines the TTP’s ties with the Afghan-Taliban and describes how the group benefited from the fall of the Ghani regime last year, and how it helped other Afghanistan-operated terrorists. How to build your relationships with groups.

Largest group of foreign fighters
According to Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper, the report said that the banned TTP has 4,000 fighters in the eastern and south-eastern areas along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border and has formed the largest group of foreign fighters there. This is the team’s first report to the committee since the Taliban’s capture of Kabul in August last year.

The report focused on the internal politics of the Taliban, its financial affairs, its ties with al-Qaeda, Daesh and other terrorist groups, and the implementation of Security Council sanctions.

Talks between the government and TTP took place on Thursday
The report was published at a time when the third round of talks between the Pakistan government and the TTP began on Thursday. The first round of talks in November last year resulted in a one-month ceasefire, but the TTP later called off the ceasefire, accusing Pakistan of breach of promise. The TTP later resumed attacks against the Pakistani army.

Figures tabulated by the Pakistan Institute of Peace Studies show that this year, the terrorist group carried out around 46 attacks, mostly against law enforcement personnel, and killed 79 people.

Group’s struggle with Pakistani security forces
The TTP has been fighting with Pakistani security forces since its inception in 2008 to pressure the country to implement Sharia laws. However, the group is being pressured by the Afghan Taliban to negotiate with the government of Pakistan to end the conflict.

The Pakistan government’s top priority in the latest round of talks is to pursue the ceasefire that ends on May 30. However, the Pakistani side has kept complete silence on the talks.

The UN report warned that “the group (TTP) is focusing on a long-term campaign against the government of Pakistan”, implying that “the ceasefire agreements have a limited chance of success”.
