
Karachi: At least 25 people, including six women of the same family, were killed in flash floods in Pakistan’s Balochistan province on Wednesday, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency in the Quetta district. Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director-General Nasir Ahmed Nassar said all the deaths were due to rain-related incidents in different parts of Balochistan.
“There have also been incidents of several people getting injured in the torrential rains,” he said. According to the PDMA, it is feared that the death toll may rise as many people are still missing due to flash floods in remote areas of Balochistan province. Nassar said that more than 300 kutcha houses have been damaged in the Quetta district. Officials said six women from the same family in Quetta were among those who lost their lives. He died when the wall of his temporary house collapsed due to rain and strong winds.
Dawn newspaper quoted the family as saying that the two injured women died because there was no arrangement to take them to the hospital. Three women and four children were also killed when a house collapsed on the outskirts of Quetta. The Balochistan government has declared a state of emergency in the Quetta district. Many districts of Balochistan province have received torrential rains with strong winds in the last 24 hours. The bodies of two girls, who lost their lives due to drowning in a deep pond in Quetta, were recovered from the Bhosa Mandi area on Tuesday night, officials said.

In the Dasht area of Mastung district, two women died after the wall of their house collapsed, he said. Three children drowned in water in the Mand area, adjacent to the Pakistan-Iran border in Kech district. Apart from this, five coal miners were also washed away in a seasonal drain. Locals rescued two of them, while three others drowned in the strong current. Heavy rains lashed parts of Nasirabad, Jaffrabad, Sibi, Ziarat, Harnai, Barkhan, Lorelai, Lasbela, Kohlu, Dera Bugti, Awaraan, Noshki, and Chagai districts where the local administration has taken relief measures.
