Indore: A group of students pursuing a Master of Journalism (MJ) course from Devi Ahilya University have raised serious allegations of irregularities and discrepancies in the evaluation of their final exam papers. The students claim that they have been marked on the basis of 60 marks instead of 100 marks, resulting in poor performance and failure of many students.
The MJ exam was conducted by the university between July and August, in which 44 students appeared. The exam consisted of two papers: Media Research and Analysis, and National and International Issues. Each paper had a maximum of 100 marks, and the students answered accordingly. However, when the university declared the result on October 3, the students were shocked to see their marks. Out of 44 students, only 22 passed, and only two secured first division. Most of the students got second or third division, while some even failed.
The aggrieved students applied for re-evaluation and went to the evaluation center on October 10 to check their answer sheets. There, they found out that the evaluator had given marks out of 60 on the main page of the answer sheet, and then converted them to marks out of 100 on the mark sheet. This meant that the students were given fewer marks for each correct answer, and some answers were not even evaluated at all. The students also noticed that both papers were checked by the same evaluator, which is against the norms of the university.
The students have lodged a complaint with the university authorities in the student hearing session. They have demanded a fair re-evaluation of their papers by a different evaluator, and a clarification from the university on why such a mistake happened. They have also questioned the credibility and quality of the evaluation process and asked for a transparent and accountable system.
The Controller of Examinations, Dr. Ashesh Tiwari, has acknowledged the receipt of the complaints from the students. He has said that he has asked for the copies of the students from the evaluation center, and will investigate the matter further. He has also said that he will present the case before the examination committee, which will decide on the appropriate action to be taken.
