Kolhapur: Section 144 has been imposed in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur after the violence on Wednesday. The Internet has been turned off. The violence took place in protest against the alleged posting of objectionable status on social media.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday appealed for calm and urged people not to take the law into their hands. In western Maharashtra’s Kolhapur city, police today used force to disperse the crowd. They were protesting against the alleged use of Tipu Sultan’s picture and ‘objectionable audio’ on social media by some locals as ‘status’. Shinde said, “Anyone taking the law into their hands will not be spared.
He said that I am in touch with the local administration and necessary instructions have been given. The welfare of the common people is our top priority. The Chief Minister said that the public should help the administration in maintaining peace. Significantly, an FIR was lodged against four people for allegedly carrying posters of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb during a procession in Ahmednagar district.
The video of this incident went viral on social media. Meanwhile, when asked about the rape and murder of an 18-year-old girl student in a government hostel in Mumbai, Shinde said it was an unfortunate incident and the police were probing it.
