Islamabad: The death toll due to the devastating floods in Pakistan has risen to more than a thousand. According to official figures released on Sunday, 119 people died in flood-related incidents across the country in the last 24 hours.
Floods triggered by heavy rains in Pakistan since June 14 have worsened the situation and inundated the plains of the country’s south and southwest regions. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Sunday that 119 people have died in the last 24 hours.
“So far 1,033 people have died in Pakistan and 1,527 have been injured,” the NDMA said. The authority said that the maximum number of people died on the last day in Sindh province, where 76 people lost their lives. In the last 24 hours, 71 people were injured due to flood-related incidents across the country.
So far 347 people have died in Sindh, 238 in Balochistan, 226 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 168 in Punjab, 38 in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), 15 in Gilgit Baltistan, and one in Islamabad. 3451.5 km of roads have been damaged by the floods.
In addition, 147 bridges were washed away, 170 shops were destroyed and 9,49,858 houses were partially or completely damaged. On August 30, the United Nations may release $ 160 million in aid to Pakistan to deal with the threat of floods.
Britain has also announced a grant of 1.5 million pounds for aid. Among Muslim countries, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Turkey, and Iran have offered to help Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif by telephone.
According to the United Arab Emirates WAM news agency, President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered the immediate release of aid to Pakistan. The UAE has sent three thousand tonnes of food items, medical supplies, tents, etc.
