The most important thing at present regarding the Omicron variant is its quick testing. Let us inform you that at present, genome sequencing of the sample of an infected person is done to detect the omicron, which takes more time. Actually, this test kit has been developed by a team of scientists from the Regional Medical Research Center (RMRC) for the North Eastern Region of ICMR.

Giving more details about this, Dr. Biswajyoti Borkakoty, the leader of the team that developed the new kit, said that “Targeted sequencing currently takes at least 36 hours while whole genome sequencing takes four to five hours.” It takes days. RMRC has developed a hydrolysis-based RT-PCR kit, which will detect the Omicron variant within two hours. The kit is completely India-made and is being produced by Kolkata-based GCC Biotech on a public-private partnership (PPP) model.”
