Panvel tehsildar Vijay Talekar said that Rs 5 lakh each has been deposited in the accounts of the heirs of 14 people who died of heatstroke during the Maharashtra Bhushan award ceremony in Kharghar, FPJ reported. The grant was distributed to the families of the deceased from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund announced by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The Maharashtra Bhushan Award ceremony program was organized in an open field on 16th April in the Kharghar area. A large number of people, mostly followers of Maharashtra Bhushan awardee Appasaheb Dharmadhikari, took part in the event held under the scorching sun. At least 14 people died due to heatstroke and other health complications during the event on Sunday. According to the postmortem report, 12 of the dead had not eaten in the last six to seven hours. The opposition criticized the state government after the deaths due to heat stroke. Congress demanded registration of a case of culpable homicide and resignation of the government. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), on the other hand, demanded an inquiry into the tragedy.
