Srinagar: In a landmark political development, the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election results have been announced, marking a decisive victory for the National Conference-Congress alliance. The coalition secured a commanding 49 seats in the 87-member assembly, solidifying their position to form the next government. The National Conference, led by veteran politician Farooq Abdullah, along with the Congress, has once again demonstrated their electoral strength in the region.
The election, held in three phases on 18 September, 25 September, and 1 October, saw a significant voter turnout. On 8 October, the results underscored the alliance’s dominance as they crossed the majority threshold, dealing a blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won 29 seats, and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which managed only 3 seats. Independent candidates and smaller parties claimed 9 seats, reflecting a scattered opposition.
In a highly anticipated move, former Chief Minister and National Conference President Farooq Abdullah announced that his son, Omar Abdullah, would once again assume the role of Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Omar, who previously held the position from 2009 to 2015, is expected to focus on a platform of governance, stability, and development in the politically sensitive region.
This election marks the first major political contest in Jammu and Kashmir since its special status under Article 370 was revoked in 2019, adding significant national and international interest to the outcome.
