New Delhi: India’s monsoon has regained strength, unleashing intense rainfall across large parts of the country. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed several regions including the Delhi-NCR, Northeast, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha on various alerts for potential heavy to very heavy downpours through the first week of August.
Delhi, NCR & North India: Wet Spell to Continue
Late Wednesday night and Thursday morning brought heavy showers to Delhi and nearby areas. The IMD predicts the rainy weather will persist through August 3–5, with Delhi already surpassing its average monthly rainfall. City authorities report increased waterlogging, with 14 rainy days in July alone and the highest frequency of monsoon showers seen in years.
Heavy Rainfall Warnings Across Heartland States
- Uttar Pradesh: The IMD warns of moderate to heavy rain, especially in western districts such as Meerut, Ghaziabad, Noida, and Agra. Other places like Bareilly, Kanpur, Aligarh, and Chitrakoot are also on alert.
- Bihar: Light to moderate rain dominates now but will intensify from August 1, with the northern and Terai regions bracing for very heavy rainfall from August 2–5.
- Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal: Frequent intense rain and thunderstorms forecast for the next five days, especially in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
- Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir: Hilly states are at elevated risk for heavy rain, possible landslides, and disruption through August 5.
Rajasthan & Madhya Pradesh: Orange Alert, School Closures
Rajasthan faces another round of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, with orange and yellow alerts across multiple districts. Districts like Ajmer and Tonk are at highest risk. Over 1,650 schools have been closed in rain-hit zones, and residents are urged to avoid nonessential travel due to potential waterlogging, flooding, and road damage.
Madhya Pradesh, especially the western part, is also on high alert for very heavy rainfall at least through August 1.
Northeast India: Assam, Meghalaya Brace for Torrential Rains
The IMD maintains an orange alert for Assam and Meghalaya with continued downpours and thunderstorms expected until at least August 5. Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are also forecast to receive heavy rain over the coming days, raising risk of flash floods.
Temperature & Rainfall Outlook
August brings heavy rain with average temperatures hovering around 32-36°C in most northern cities and slightly cooler conditions in the Northeast and hilly regions. More than 208mm of average precipitation is expected this August, which could lead to further flooding and urban waterlogging.
