New Strain of Monkeypox Detected in Kerala
A new strain, Clade 1B, of the monkeypox virus has been identified in Kerala. A 38-year-old man who recently returned from Dubai tested positive and is currently in isolation. This marks the entry of the monkeypox virus into India, prompting immediate action from health authorities.
Health Ministry’s Guidelines for States
In response to the new strain, the Ministry of Health has issued comprehensive guidelines for all states. These guidelines emphasize the importance of vigilance and preparedness:
- Isolation of Suspected Cases: All suspected monkeypox cases must be isolated immediately. Strict infection prevention and control measures are crucial.
- Hospital Isolation Protocols: Proper isolation facilities must be established for both suspected and confirmed cases.
- Logistics and Human Resources: Ensure the availability of necessary logistics and trained personnel in healthcare facilities.
- Sample Testing: If monkeypox symptoms are observed, samples from skin lesions should be sent for testing. Positive samples must be sent to ICMR-NIV for clade determination.
- Diagnostic Testing: Utilize the robust diagnostic capabilities available, including 36 ICMR-supported laboratories and three commercial PCR kits approved by CDSCO.
- Ongoing Monitoring: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will continue to monitor the situation and provide support to states and union territories.
