New York : A deadly and chaotic shooting erupted in Midtown Manhattan Monday evening, leaving five people dead including a New York City police officer, three civilians, and the assailant inside the 44-story skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue, according to NYPD and city officials. The building is home to several high-profile offices, including Blackstone, KPMG, and the NFL headquarters.

The suspect, Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, Nevada, arrived at the scene after a days-long drive across the country. Security cameras captured Tamura exiting a black BMW with an M4 assault rifle. He stormed into the building around 6:30p.m., immediately opening fire in the lobby fatally wounding NYPD officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was working security. Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, leaves behind a pregnant wife and two children; he was praised by Mayor Eric Adams as a “true blue hero.”

Tamura then shot a security guard and another civilian before taking an elevator to the 33rd floor (location of Rudin Management offices), where he shot another victim and then turned the gun on himself. Officials said the gunman was heavily armed, carrying additional magazines, ammunition, and a loaded revolver in his vehicle. His suicide note referenced chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and ongoing mental health struggles.

The violent episode sent the building into lockdown, prompting a massive response by NYPD, FDNY, and federal agencies as they swept all floors and secured the situation. Mayor Adams issued a warning via social media immediately after the attack, urging Midtown residents to shelter in place and avoid the area as the investigation continued.

The investigation is being led by NYPD, with support from federal agencies. No clear motive has been established, but officials confirm Tamura had a documented history of mental health issues. Authorities believe he acted alone; surveillance footage and physical evidence from his vehicle are under review. The scene has been secured and the threat is over, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

The Park Avenue skyscraper remains a crime scene as New York City reels from this rare and tragic incident in the financial heart of the city.
