The Government of India has officially appointed Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani (Retired) as the country’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He is set to succeed the incumbent, General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure concludes on May 30, 2026. In addition to his responsibilities as the nation’s highest-ranking military officer, Lieutenant General Subramani will assume the role of Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs, Government of India, until further orders.
Widely recognized as one of the most dynamic and astute strategic minds in the Indian Army, Lieutenant General Subramani brings a wealth of operational experience to the post. Since September 1, 2025, he has served as the Military Advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat. His career milestones include serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 2024 to July 2025, and previously commanding the Central Command as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief from March 2023 to June 2024.
New Leadership for the Indian Navy
In a concurrent move to bolster maritime leadership, Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been appointed as the next Chief of Naval Staff. Currently serving as the Western Naval Commander in Mumbai, Admiral Swaminathan is scheduled to take charge on May 31, 2026. His tenure is expected to extend through December 31, 2028.
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, Admiral Swaminathan is a distinguished specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (Khadakwasla), his professional pedigree includes advanced training at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the United Kingdom and the United States Naval War College. Throughout his career, he has maintained a deep association with the College of Naval Warfare. His primary mandate as Chief will involve safeguarding India’s vast maritime borders and accelerating the modernization of the naval fleet.
Context and Evolution of the CDS Role
The office of the Chief of Defence Staff was formally established on January 1, 2020, to create a more integrated and efficient military structure. General Bipin Rawat served as the inaugural CDS, establishing the precedent for a four-star General to act as the primary military advisor to the government.
The CDS functions as the “first among equals” relative to the other service chiefs, holding the crucial responsibility of fostering synergy across the Army, Navy, and Air Force. By heading the Department of Military Affairs, the CDS ensures that defense procurement, joint operations, and strategic planning are streamlined to meet the demands of modern warfare.
