Thiruvananthapuram: In an era dominated by the Internet and rapid information exchange, the proliferation of “fake news” has become a pressing concern. Recognizing this challenge, the Kerala government has taken a proactive step by integrating a “fake news detection” system into its ICT (Information and Communication Technology) syllabus. Notably, Kerala has even outpaced Britain in implementing this crucial educational initiative.
The Kerala Education Department has introduced the “Fake News Detection” curriculum in ICT textbooks, specifically targeting students in classes V and VII. Through this program, students learn to identify and fact-check misinformation circulating on online platforms. A senior official revealed this development on Monday, emphasizing Kerala’s commitment to digital media literacy.
Back in 2022, Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), the technology arm of the education department led by CEO K. Anvar Sadath, embarked on a comprehensive training program. A staggering 19.72 lakh students from grades 5 to 10 received instruction on preventing fake news dissemination and raising awareness about its impact. This initiative underscores Kerala’s dedication to equipping its youth with critical media literacy skills.
Meanwhile, across the seas, Britain is also considering incorporating similar content into its primary school curriculum. Reports suggest that the UK aims to address the challenges posed by misinformation through educational interventions. However, Kerala’s proactive approach has already set a precedent, positioning it as a pioneer in combating fake news at the grassroots level.
Anwar Sadath, the driving force behind KITE, highlighted the significance of this endeavor. He stated that 9.48 lakh upper primary students and 10.24 lakh secondary students participated in the training sessions, facilitated by 5,920 dedicated trainers. Notably, Kerala’s ICT textbook for class 7 introduces students to the fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), marking a groundbreaking milestone in Indian education.
As the battle against fake news intensifies, Kerala’s early adoption of this curriculum serves as a beacon of hope, empowering the next generation with critical thinking skills and media literacy. The state’s commitment to staying ahead of the curve underscores its dedication to fostering an informed and discerning citizenry.
