A top US Defense Department official said on Tuesday that Iran could make enough material for a nuclear bomb in just 12 days. Iran has collected a large consignment of uranium. According to the news agency Reuters, Dr. Colin Kahl told lawmakers that under the terms of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, it used to take Iran a year to produce enough material for a nuclear bomb. “Since leaving our Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran’s nuclear progress has been remarkable,” he said. When the previous administration decided to leave the JCPOA, it took Iran about 12 months to produce enough material for a bomb. Now it will take about 12 days.
“And so I think the view is still that if you can resolve this issue diplomatically and put a stop to their nuclear program, that’s better than other options,” Kahl said. But at the moment the JCPOA is lying dormant. At the same time, US officials say that Iran has come close to producing fissile material. But they do not believe that he has actually mastered the technique of making bombs.
