Warsaw: In a significant diplomatic milestone, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Poland has elevated bilateral relations between the two nations to the level of a strategic partnership. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland in nearly 50 years, underscoring the importance of this historic engagement.
During his two-day visit, which commenced on August 21, Prime Minister Modi and his Polish counterpart, Donald Tusk, held extensive talks that led to the signing of a pivotal Social Security Agreement. This agreement is set to enhance the movement of skilled workers between the two countries, facilitating greater collaboration in various sectors.
The discussions between Modi and Tusk also focused on significantly expanding defense and security relations. Poland expressed a strong desire to become a key partner in India’s ambitious efforts to boost domestic defense production and modernize its armed forces. The two leaders’ commitment to this partnership was further solidified with the unveiling of a comprehensive five-year ‘Action Plan’ (2024-2028) for the India-Poland Strategic Partnership. This plan outlines specific areas of cooperation, including defense, trade, agro-tech, energy, green technology, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, and mining.
In addition to his talks with Tusk, Prime Minister Modi also met with Polish President Andrzej Duda, further strengthening diplomatic ties. The leaders emphasized the importance of accelerating the India-EU Trade and Investment Dialogue and operationalizing the India-EU Business and Technology Council (TTC) to foster deeper cooperation.
Addressing the media alongside Tusk, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the significance of the 70th anniversary of India-Poland diplomatic relations, stating, “On this momentous occasion, we have decided to transform our relationship into a strategic partnership.”
The ‘Action Plan’ identified several priority areas to guide future collaboration, encompassing political and security cooperation, trade and investment, transport and connectivity, climate, energy, mining, science and technology, and the EU-India partnership.
As part of his diplomatic tour, Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to visit Kyiv, Ukraine, on Friday, where he will spend approximately seven hours. This visit to Ukraine marks the second leg of his two-nation tour.
This visit not only strengthens India’s ties with Poland but also reflects India’s growing role on the global stage, fostering strategic partnerships with key European nations.
