Dubai: US officials on Tuesday blocked several ‘news websites’ affiliated with the Iranian government. This is a move that can be seen as a far-reaching crackdown on the Iranian media amid rising tensions between the US and Iran.

The US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the US has closed about three dozen websites, most of which were linked to propaganda efforts by Iran. The US government has not yet made any official announcement in this regard. Iran’s state news agency IRNA announced the closure of the website by the US government but did not provide any detailed information on the matter.

The move comes days after world powers tried to reactivate Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal and Iran’s judiciary chief Ibrahim Raisi’s presidential election victory.

In his first press conference since his election victory, Raisi had ruled out talks with US President Joe Biden on support for Tehran’s ballistic missile program and regional militias.
