New Delhi: In a significant move during the Modi government’s tenure, the iconic Darbar Hall and Ashok Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan have undergone name changes. The Ashok Hall is now known as Ashok Mandap, while the Darbar Hall has been renamed Republic Mandap.

Reflecting Indian Culture and Heritage

The President’s Office emphasized its commitment to making Rashtrapati Bhavan more accessible and culturally resonant. Both are used for ceremonies and celebrations. The grand Durbar Hall and Ashok Hall have been rechristened as Ganatantra Mandap and Ashok Mandap, respectively. These changes align with ongoing efforts to infuse Indian cultural ethos into the historic premises.

Ganatantra Mandap: A Fitting Name

“Durbar” historically referred to courts and assemblies of Indian rulers and the British. However, after India became a Republic, the concept of “Ganatantra” (meaning democracy) gained prominence. Thus, renaming the Durbar Hall as Ganatantra Mandap reflects this deep-rooted Indian societal value.

Ashok Mandap: Symbolism and Unity

The Ashok Hall, originally a ballroom, now bears the name Ashok Mandap. The word “Ashok” signifies being free from suffering and sorrow. It also pays homage to Emperor Ashoka, an emblem of unity and peaceful coexistence. The National Emblem of India, the lion capital of Ashok from Sarnath, further reinforces this symbolism. By adopting “Ashok Mandap,” the Rashtrapati Bhavan aims to maintain linguistic uniformity while preserving the essence of the term “Ashok”.

Political Reactions

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi welcomed the change, appreciating the name Ashoka. However, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed a different perspective, emphasizing the concept of “Shahenshah” (emperor) over “court.” The renaming has sparked lively discussions among political circles.
