New Delhi: In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves across the medical fraternity, a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. As the nation grapples with this heinous crime, doctors from all corners of the country are uniting in protest, demanding justice for the victim.

Nationwide Strike by Doctors

Thousands of resident doctors have taken to the streets, their anger palpable. They have announced a complete work stoppage until the victim receives justice. Simultaneously, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has declared the closure of outpatient department (OPD) services nationwide on August 13th. The call for action comes in response to the horrific incident that unfolded within the walls of RG Kar Medical College.

Three Demands for Justice

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has penned a stern letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, outlining three critical demands:

  1. Impartial Investigation and Culprit Punishment: The case must be thoroughly investigated, and the perpetrators brought to justice.
  2. Root Cause Analysis: A detailed inquiry should uncover the underlying reasons behind this gruesome crime.
  3. Enhanced Safety Measures: Immediate steps must be taken to ensure the safety of doctors, particularly women, within hospital premises.

Maharashtra Joins the Protest

In solidarity with their Kolkata counterparts, doctors in Maharashtra have called for a bandh starting at 9 am today. All non-emergency services in Maharashtra hospitals are suspended, while emergency services continue to operate.

The Grisly Discovery

On August 9th, the lifeless body of the female doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. The second-year student, who had been on duty, bore several injury marks. The police arrested an outsider an individual who frequented the hospital premises in connection with the crime. Shockingly, investigations revealed that the accused had a history of watching violent pornography.
