New Delhi: Preparing ‘Vegetarian Thali’ became 34 percent costlier in July as compared to June due to rising tomato prices. The unit of a rating agency gave this information in a report on Monday. CRISIL’s ‘Roti Chawal Rates’ report for August said that the non-vegetarian thali has been relatively less impacted and the cost of preparation has gone up by only 13 percent.
It has been said in the report that the inflation of thalis has been mainly due to the increase of 233 percent in the prices of tomatoes. Tomato prices reached Rs 110 per kg in July, while Rs 33 per kg in June.
Effect of some vegetables being expensive
Crisil said that the average cost of preparing thali at home is calculated based on the prevailing cost of commodity prices in North, South, East, and West India. It has been said that this is the third consecutive month the cost of the plate to be expensive. It was said that this is the first time in the financial year 2023-24 when the prices have become expensive even from a year-to-year perspective.
On a monthly basis, onion and potato prices increased by 16 percent and nine percent, respectively, adding to the cost, the report said. Chilli prices rose 69 percent in July compared to June, Crisil said, but since the requirement for cooking food is marginally lower, its impact on plate preparation is limited.
The report said that the marginal increase in the price of a thali for non-vegetarians is due to a 3 to 5 percent drop in the price of broiler chicken, which accounts for almost half of the cost of a thali. It has been said that due to a fall of 2 percent in the price of vegetable oil on a monthly basis, there has been some relief from the increase in the cost of both types of plates.
