Key Points

  • Fatalities and Injuries: Five workers killed, five others injured in reactor blast at Gujarat's Bharuch chemical plant.
  • Cause of Blast: Explosion suspected to have occurred during hydrogenation process, leading to toxic methylene dichloride gas leak.
  • Victims Identified: Deceased include Jaydeep Patel, Bhavik Vasava, Vrund Talaviya, Aniket Gautam, and Arjunkumar Gautam.
  • Response and Investigation: Officials from Gujarat Pollution Control Board, DISH, and police are investigating the incident.

Blast at Gujarat Chemical Unit Claims Five Lives

BHARUCH: An explosion at SynZeal Pharmachem, a chemical manufacturing unit in the Saykha GIDC area of Vagra taluka, resulted in five fatalities and five injuries. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Friday (October 16, 2026) during a hydrogenation process, according to officials. The blast was so severe that it tore apart the reactor tank, scattering machinery parts across the premises.

The victims included Jaydeep Maheshbhai Patel and Bhavik Dilipkumar Vasava from Amod, Vrund Talaviya from Gir Somnath district, and Uttar Pradesh natives Aniket Harilal Gautam and Arjunkumar Ramsingh Gautam. The injured workers, Pavankumar Ramsingh Gautam, Mausamkumar Ramsevak Yadav, Shivdayal Ramavatar Yadav, Pratik Pravin Prajapati, and Priyanshu Bahadurlal, are undergoing treatment at local hospitals. They hailed from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

The explosion triggered a leak of methylene dichloride (MDC) gas, according to an official from the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH). The toxic fumes raised concerns about environmental impact and worker safety. Emergency services, including the Gujarat Pollution Control Board, DISH officials, and police, arrived at the scene promptly to manage the situation and initiate an investigation into the cause of the blast.

Background on SynZeal Pharmachem and Industrial Safety in Gujarat

SynZeal Pharmachem, established only a year ago in the Saykha GIDC area of Bharuch district, specializes in manufacturing pharmaceutical intermediates. The facility is part of Gujarat's broader industrial landscape, which has seen rapid expansion in chemical and pharmaceutical sectors over the past decade.

The Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) is a key regulatory body in Gujarat responsible for ensuring compliance with industrial safety standards. In recent years, the state has faced several incidents of chemical plant accidents, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of safety protocols. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains a subject of debate among industry experts and labor rights activists.

The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) plays a crucial role in monitoring environmental compliance at industrial units. In the aftermath of such incidents, authorities often emphasize the need for enhanced safety training and regular inspections to prevent future tragedies.

Response from Authorities and Ongoing Investigations

Following the explosion, officials from DISH, GPCB, and the police were deployed to the site. The investigation is focusing on determining whether safety protocols were followed during the hydrogenation process, which involves high-pressure reactions and potentially hazardous chemicals.

Superintendent of Police Akshyaraj Makwana confirmed that the deceased workers were identified, and their families have been notified. The injured are being treated at local hospitals, with some in critical condition.

The incident has drawn attention from state and national authorities. The Gujarat government is likely to review its industrial safety policies in light of this tragedy, though no official statements have been made as of yet.
